How To Test A Capacitor With The Digital And Analogue Multimeter

First step on how to test a capacitor with digital capacitance or multimeter is to calculate the value. Without knowing the capacitor value you will not know if a capacitor is good or bad. Capacitor values come in the unit of picofarad(pf), nanofarad(nf) and microfarad(uf). Here is just some of the examples of capacitor values:
1)102 = 10 00pf = 1nf
2)104= 10 0000pf= 100nf or 0.1uf
3)223= 22 000pf = 22nf or 0.022uf
so in the picture above we have 184 which is 18 0000= 0.18uf and the letter "J" means 5% tolerance. Every capacitors comes with a working voltage and the the typical values are 100 Volts, 250 Volts, 400 Volts, 1000 Volts, 1600 Volts and etc.
Testing Capacitor
Electrolytic capacitor have the capacitance value printed on its body thus no calculation involved! Look at the picture below:

The right way to test the value of capacitors
In order to test capacitor value you must use a digital capacitance meter as shown above, simply connect any capacitors to the digital capacitor meter. If you want to check an electrolytic capacitor make sure you connect the black probe to the negative lead while the red probe to the other lead. Read from the LCD display the capacitance value. Set the capacitance meter to higher range if you want to check a capacitor.
For example, if you want to test the 470 micro farad capacitor, the meter have to be set to 2000 micro farad as shown from the picture above. If you want to test on the non polarity capacitor like the ceramic capacitor, you can connect your test probes on either leads of the capacitor and read from the LCD display of the meter. If the LCD display shows a result of 330 microfarad when measuring a 470 microfarad capacitor, you would know that the capacitance value has changed and need a replacement. It is as simple as that to test a capacitor if it good or bad.

Second method is to use analog multimeter and place the probes across the capacitors lead. You can't test the capacitance value with this method. What you can test is the charging and discharging of the capacitor. Set the ohm meter range to low ohms first and gradually increase the range when you come to test smaller capacitor value like the 0.1 micro farad capacitor. The disadvantage of this method is even if there is a bad capacitance value, the meter would still shows charging and discharging in the faulty capacitor. Avoid using this method on how to test a capacitor.

A Simple Way to Test Capacitors.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard or read "I tested the capacitors and they all test good but it still doesn't work." The person doing the speaking or writing had used a modern capacitor tester which only puts about 3 volts across the capacitor. That may be fine for caps used in transistor circuits but not for those used in tube circuits. The voltages in tube circuits can be as high as 600 volts and rarely are less than 100 volts. To perform a valid test you must place a significant voltage across the cap. After giving some preliminary information a method will be provided for making valid tests on capacitors.

Types of Capacitors.

There are two basic kinds of capacitors, electrolytic and nonelectrolytic. Electrolytic capacitors are used in the power supplies of vacuum tube and transistor equipment. The testing method described here requires a modification to the basic testing method discussed below. The non-electrolytic caps are subdivided into ceramic, paper, mica, and plastic. The plastic kind are further subdivided into various names of the plastic and all of them seem to begin with "polly". I'm not going to bore you by laboring through each of the various pollies. The next time you order capacitors from a catalog or online you will make their acquaintance.

Common Capacitor Troubles.

The most frequent failure mode of nonelectrolytic capacitors is to become leaky. They behave as if a large value resistor, 100 k ohms or higher, has been connected in parallel with the cap. As these types of caps are most frequently used to block DC from getting to a particular part of the circuit when they become leaky they no longer perform that function. For example in a standard circuit arrangement a cap is used to couple signal from the plate of a tube to the grid of the next tube. The DC which is also present at the plate of a tube is most definitely not wanted at the grid of the next. A leaky cap can send some of the DC to the grid causing lots of trouble.
A leaky cap can manifest itself in several ways. If the grid belongs to an output tube the plate may glow red. The leaky capacitor places some positive DC on the grid which may partly or wholly cancel the negative bias. This causes the tube to draw too much current and the plate has to dissipate more power than it is rated for. To get rid of the extra power it rises to a higher temperature and gets hot enough to glow red. This is never a normal condition. If the coupling cap is between low level stages, further back in the amplifier, the resistance in the plate circuit will keep the tube from dissipating enough power to glow red but the sound will be badly distorted. You can often verify this using a voltmeter to measure grid voltages. Tubes that use cathode bias should have zero volts on the grid. Tubes which use fixed bias should have the negative voltage on the grids and in the case of a push pull output both tubes should have the same grid voltage.
There aren't many places where even a small amount of leakage can be tolerated but there are a few. Often a capacitor is connected from some part of the circuit to ground. These are usually called "bypass" capacitors. That's not a special kind of cap, just the way it is being used in the circuit. If the resistance associated with the cap is not too large it can work for many years with a small leakage current. If it is a screen bypass cap it may lower the screen grid voltage and lower the gain of the amplifier stage. A leaky cap in the AGC circuit of a receiver may or may not have a significant effect on its operation.
Electrolytic capacitors can fail in one of two ways. One is to be open. The capacitance is reduced to a very small value because the electrolyte has dried out. It will no longer provide filtering and the symptom will be a strong AC hum in the radio or amplifier.
The other failure mode is to conduct a heavy current when the operating voltage is applied. This will blow the power supply fuse if the equipment has one. In an all American five radio such a capacitor will burn out the rectifier tube. Note that such a capacitor may test as good on a tester intended for transistor electrolytic capacitors.
One more failure mode of capacitors is to develop a series resistance. This is abbreviated ESR which stands for effective series resistance. This failure mode is difficult to test for using simple equipment such as is being discussed in this article. It happens much more often to electrolytic than to plastic film capacitors. In a power supply it will manifest itself as increased ripple in the power supply but the capacitor will test good using the technique described on this page.

Making the Test.

This is not an in circuit test. You must at the very least disconnect one end of the cap. If you are using a DMM or VTVM and you leave one end of the cap connected to the circuit it is possible that some interference can be picked up and throw the readings off. Here is the test circuit.

The power supply should provide a fairly stable DC output. The meter should be set to measure DC voltage.

Power supply voltage.

The power supply doesn't have to be adjustable but things may be easier if it is. It needs to be matched to the capacitors to be tested. If you have a 600 volt power supply, you can only test 600 volt, and higher, capacitors. If you have a 400 volt supply, you can test 400 volt, and higher, caps. If you have a 200 volt power supply ... I think you get the idea. Most coupling and bypass caps are 400 or 600 volts so in the example below a 400 volt power supply will be used.

Type and Range Setting of the Meter.

If you use a 20,000 ohms per volt VOM set to the 500 volt range its input resistance is 10 meg ohms. That's the input resistance of most DMMs and VTVMs. Before you use a particular instrument be sure you know what it is. If you have a DMM or VTVM that has a 100 or 1000 meg ohm input resistance you can connect a 10 meg ohm resistor in parallel with it. If you have a 1000 ohms per volt VOM you can't use it, it's not sensitive enough. Match the range setting to the power supply. I use an adjustable power supply set to 400 volts and a VOM set to the 500 volt range. Remember that the resistance of a VOM changes depending on the setting of the range switch. If you are using a 200 volt or 600 volt power supply set the range of your meter accordingly. The meter should always be set to a range higher than the voltage of the power supply. That way even if the capacitor is a dead short you won't do any damage to your meter.
If you are testing an electrolytic capacitor connect a 220 k ohm 2 watt resistor in parallel with your meter.

Making the Test.

In the following it is assumed that the power supply comes on instantly when the switch is thrown. If it does not because of the warm up delay of a rectifier tube you need to connect a switch in series with the capacitor so you can apply the voltage suddenly. Connect up the circuit and set the meter to the proper range as explained above. If the meter is a DMM or VTVM turn it on and let it warm up. Then turn on the power supply. The meter will show a high voltage for a short time but the reading will decay to zero vary quickly.
The time back to zero is about 8 time constants. One time constant in seconds is equal to R in ohms times C in farads. If you are using a meter with 10 meg ohms input resistance and testing a .1 microfarad cap the time constant is 1 second. If the capacitor is good the meter should indicate zero after 8 seconds.
If you are testing an electrolytic capacitor calculate the time constant from 220 k ohms times the capacitance in farads.
If the cap is totally shorted the meter will read the output voltage of the power supply and stay there. A more likely outcome is for the cap to be leaky. In that case the meter will kick high and fall back but not all the way to zero. Using a 10 meg ohm meter the leakage current in microamps is given by I = V / 10. A cap with a leakage current of only 1 microamp will throw the bias off by .5 volts if the grid resistor is 500 k ohms.
Switching the meter to a lower range should be done with caution. If you should forget to change it back you could burn out your meter.
If the meter fails to kick high it means one of two things. Either the capacitor is open or the capacitance is too small to produce a noticeable kick. A .01 microfarad cap is about the smallest that will give the kick. Of course this depends on the response speed of the meter movement. You might be able to go as low as .0025 microfarads if you have a small and fast meter.
If you connect an electrolytic capacitor to the tester a direct current will be observed which will never go to zero. This is termed the leakage current. In normal operation it does no harm but if it becomes too large the capacitor can fail violently as described above. A set of formulas which give the approximate leakage current are given below.
ILMin = Sqrt(VC)/5 ILMax = Sqrt(VC)/2
ILWorst Case = Sqrt(VC)*6
Where IL is the leakage current in microamps, V is the rated voltage in volts, and C is the rated capacitance of the capacitor in microfarads. With a 220 k ohm resistor in parallel with the meter the leakage current is given by
ILMeasured = V / 220 k ohms
Where V is the reading on the voltmeter. This circuit can be used to reform an old electrolytic. The current will gradually come down over time when left connected. If the leakage current will not go below the worst case value calculated above it is doubtful that it can be used successfully in a circuit. It should be thrown away.
The ILMin and ILMax values may seem a little optimistic especially on older capacitors. However the ILWorst Case is not. For example suppose you have a 100 uf cap at 450 volts. If you apply 400 volts to this capacitor the worst case leakage current is.
ILWorst Case = Sqrt(400*100)*6 = 1.2 x 103 microamps = 1.2 mA.
Multiplying this current by 400 volts gives the power dissipated by the leaky capacitor.
P = 1.2 mA x 400 volts = 0.48 watts.
That's getting up to the point where the capacitor may begin to feel a little warm. If it's warm on the outside it's hot on the inside. To avoid a literal explosion it's best not to use a capacitor with this amount of leakage.

NOS and NIB.

These are terms you often run into on eBay or online antique electronics dealers. NOS stands for New Old Stock and NIB stands for New In Box. They mean essentially the same thing. The product May be 50 years old but has never been taken out of the box or has never been used in any way. Electrolytic capacitors that are NOS or NIB have special problems and may be revived as explained in the article
Restoring Dead Capacitors. Nonelectrolytics may be as good as the day they rolled off the production line or the may not. This test is absolutely recommended for such caps.

A Stand Alone Cap Tester.

If you like to build things you may want to make a dedicated capacitor tester rather than kluge it together each time you test a cap. If so, here is a circuit.

The transformer should be a 280 VCT (140-0-140) at as low a current rating as you can find. Unless you plan to let it serve double duty as a project power supply. When used to test capacitors the current drawn from the transformer secondary is miniscule. The meter needs to be a 50 microamp full scale movement. If it has a 0 to 50 microamp scale that's fine because the current is what you really want to know. If it has a different scale you can replace it using the techniques described in the Filter Choke Analyzer article. Do not omit the 150 k ohm 2 watt resistor. This is to discharge the filter capacitor after the power switch is turned off. The nature of this tester requires that the voltage start from zero each time. The 150 k ohm resistor discharges the filter capacitor. When testing small non-electrolytic capacitors the switch should be set to the open position. In this setting the meter reads leakage current directly.
When testing electrolytic capacitors the meter becomes a voltmeter with 500 volts full scale. The measured leakage current is
ILMeasured = V / R
Where V is the reading on the voltmeter and R is the value of the resistor that is selected. The selection of resistors allows the tester to be used to reform electrolytic capacitors. For details on how to reform capacitors refer to

Mengatasi Kerusakan pada Blackberry

Ok, I've seen alot of people lately using JL_Cmder to wipe the device, but some are having problems. So, heres a How-To on how to use JL_Cmder. I hope this helps a few people out.

1) DownloadJL_Cmder from the attached file below, unzip & install to the computer.

2) Now, go ahead and sync all of your info or back it up. If you DO NOT, you will lose it ALL, obviously because we are wiping the device.

3) If you do not have the latest version of the Desktop Manager, download it fromHERE
Also, make sure, that you have the OS you are wanting to install to the device, installed to your computer as well.

4)Make sure the Vendor XML file is deleted if you are going to install a OS that is not from your carrier. The vendor XML file can be located by going toC:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\ResearchInMotion\Applo ader

5) Make sure the DM is closed and plug in BB to computer via USB

6) Go to theJL_Cmderon your computer and double click it to start. Now, this may take a few tries to connect, so keep trying until it does.

7) On the first screen, Press any key to continue.


8) Now, if your device uses a password, enter it now. If not, press "N"

11) Now type "blackberry" to continue

12) Now you will see a white screen with a'507' Error Don't worry, this is what you want! You are now ready to install the OS.

13) Open the DM

14) Select Apploader and step your way to the finish. After the OS is installed, it will take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to reboot the device. DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEVICE UNTIL THE APPLOADER SCREEN SAYS "THE LOADING OPERATION WAS SUCCESSFUL!!

15) Almost done. Now, with the DM still open go to the Main page and Select "Backup & Restore" and restore from the backup that was made before wiping.

That's it! You have now wiped your device withJL_Cmder
Make sure you follow the instructions, and you shouldn't have a problem. I hope this helps.

EDIT: How to use JL_Cmder with Vistax64:

Download and install this version HERE
1. Download JL_Cmder from HERE NON-INSTALLER
2. Extract contents
3. Download MY version
4. Replace CHOICE.COM with the my version of the file.
5. Rename my version extension to CHOICE.COM (thanks minigts for the catch!)
6. Right click JL_Cmder.cmd and choose properties
7. Click compatibility tab and check Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
8. Click OK
9. Run JL_Cmder.cmd
10. Continue as stated in the directions above.

Mengatasi Kerusakan pada Blackberry

Blackberry tidak terlepas dari permasalahan, salah satunya adalah kegagalan blackberry untuk hidup kembali dengan indikasi terdapat layar putih dengan pesan kesalahan, layar gelap hanya LED saja yang menyala atau bahkan hanya layar gelap belaka (mati total atau sering disebut matot). Hal ini dapat diakibatkan oleh banyak faktor. Secara garis besar penyebab matinya Blackberry dapat dibagi menjadi 2 faktor yaitu:
  1. Kerusakan Hardware
  2. Kerusakan Software
Artikel ini mencoba mendiagnosis permasalahan apakah diakibatkan oleh permasalahan hardware ataupun permasalahan software. Ada beberapa usaha yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini yaitu copot battery, tukar battery.
Copot Battery
Usaha pertama yang perlu dilakukan adalah dengan melakukan “Battery Pull” atau copot battery. Hal ini dilakukan dengan cara melepas baterai dan menunggu sekitar lebih kurang 3 menit sebelum memasang kembali battery. Apabila tidak berhasil, coba lepas SIM Card dan Media Card sebelum memasang kembali battery. Apabila blackberry masih tidak dapat menyala, coba lakukan tukar battery atau Recharge battery yang caranya akan dijelaskan berikut ini.
Tukar Battery
Usaha tukar battery bertujuan untuk memastikan bahwa permasalahan bukan diakibatkan oleh battery, hal yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan mencoba memasang baterai yang “good” dan “fully recharge” ke blackberry yang bermasalah. Apabila blackberry dapat menyala, ganti atau charge ulang battery menggunakan cara berikut ini. Apabila tidak berhasil, artinya permasalahan bukan disebabkan oleh battery, coba dengan me-”reload” OS.
Recharge Battery
Usaha ini mencoba melakukan charging pada battery yang sudah habis total.
  1. Cabut Baterai, SIM Card, Media Card, biarkan terbuka
  2. Jalankan Desktop Manager
  3. Sambungkan Blackberry dengan PC menggunakan kabel USB
  4. Tunggu sampai muncul gambar battery disilang
  5. Pasang battery tanpa melepas sambungan blackberry dengan PC
  6. Tunggu sampai Blackberry menyala, biarkan charge sampai beberapa garis battery
  7. Cabut koneksi, segera charge dengan charger
Masuk ke Safe Mode
Apabila masalah terjadi setelah instalasi aplikasi/themes dan setelah reboot tidak dapat masuk ke home, coba masuk ke safe mode dan hapus aplikasi/themes pada modus safe mode.
  1. Lepas dan pasang kembali baterai
  2. Ketika Lampu LED mati, tekan dan tahan tombol Escape sampai muncul kotak dialog
  3. Jawab OK
Untuk kembali ke modus normal dengan cara lepas batterai dan pasang kembali baterai.
Reload Sistem Operasi
Langkah pertama adalah mencoba me-load sistem operasi Blackberry menggunakan bantuan command prompt (lihat Repair Nuked Blackberry). Install Desktop Manager pada PC, kemudian install OS menggunakan OS “bawaan” yang biasanya disertakan di dalam CD yang terdapat di dalam kardus Blackberry. Pastikan OS lain yang sudah diinstall di dalam PC dihapus terlebih dahulu.
Delete file Vendor.xml yang terdapat di dalam folder “Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/AppLoader”.
Pastikan Desktop Manager tidak “Running” di dalam Windows, apabila Desktop Manager “Running”, Matikan autostart dan restart Windows. Kemudian ikuti langkah langkah di bawah ini:
  1. Jalankan Command Prompt (Ketik Alt+R kemudian ketik cmd + Enter)
  2. Ketikkan pada Command Prompt
    CD \ (Tekan Enter)
    CD PROGRA~1 (Tekan Enter)
    CD COMMON~1 (Tekan Enter)
    CD RESEAR~1 (Tekan Enter)
    CD APPLOA~1 (Tekan Enter)
    LOADER /NOJVM (Tekan Enter)
  3. Tunggu sampai selesai
  4. Restore Backup anda dengan Desktop Manager apabila proses loading firmware selesai

LED Error Code
Kode kedipan lampu LED pada saat awal loading blackberry menunjukkan suatu nilai biner yang menginformasikan pesan dari bootROM. Kode ini ditampilkan dalam bentuk kedipan lampu led berwarna merah,
biner 1 ditunjukkan dengan nyala kedip (lampu merah) sedangkan biner 0 ditunjukkan dengan tidak nyalanya led (off). Apabila led menyala secara kontinyu, ini merupakan pesan sedang melakukan security wipe, apabila led menyala kontinyu tidak pada saat melakukan security wipe, ini mengindikasikan adanya kerusakan hardware.
  • 1 (desimal = 1) Bukan problem, kode ini adalah normal saat restart
  • 11 (desimal = 3) Tidak ada sistem operasi di dalam blackberry, lakukan reload sistem operasi (pakai jurus /nojvm)
  • 101 (desimal = 5) Bad OS CRC
  • 111 (desimal = 7) Missing OS CRC
  • 1011 (desimal = 11) Missing OS Trailer
  • 1101 (desimal = 13)OS Not Signed, coba loading OS kembali
  • 1111 (desimal = 15) OS Signature Invalid, coba loading kembali OS dan biarkan mati tanpa baterai selama hampir 30 menit, kemudian coba hidupkan kembali. Apabila tetap muncul pesak kesalahan, coba lakukan penggantian flash.

JVM Error Code
  • 101     Internal JVM error.
  • 102     Invalid code in file system. The .cod files in the handheld have been checked for modification and it has been determined that there is a problem with one or more .cod files.
  • 103     The starting address for the boot .cod file cannot be found. This might mean that a boot .cod file has not been installed on the handheld, or that its format is invalid or corrupt.
  • 104     An uncaught Java exception was thrown in the Java code and diagnosed by the JVM. Execution can be continued or the handheld can be attached to a debugger on a desktop through a serial or USB cable. The event log should contain the traceback of the thrown exception.
  • 105     An OS file system API returned an error status for a certain operation. This can indicate a corrupt file system or an error in the JVM.
  • 106     An error has been detected in the graphics system of the handheld.
  • 107     Internal JVM error.
  • 108     Internal JVM error.
  • 109     Internal OS error.
  • 110     Non-idle event downtime error. A problem has been detected in the accumulation of JVM down time that represents how long the JVM has been idle. This indicates an error in either the OS code or the JVM code.
  • 200     Application manager threw an uncaught exception. The application manager event thread threw an uncaught exception and so cannot continue running.
  • 201     Initialization of the cryptographic system failed and the handheld cannot continue to operate.
  • 202     An attack on the key store has been detected, and the handheld cannot continue to operate.
  • 203     The application manager console process, usually the Home screen ribbon, has failed, like due to an uncaught exception.
  • 501     Internal error.
  • 502     All processes exited. The last Java process has terminated, and there is nothing left to execute.
  • 503     Internal error.
  • 504     Internal error.
  • 505     Internal error.
  • 506     An uncaught Java exception was thrown in the initial VM Java thread thus killing the only live thread in the system. The event log contains the traceback for the exception.
  • 507     A dependency on a .cod file could not be satisfied due to a missing .cod file. Load the missing .cod file onto the handheld.
  • 508     Invalid object. A problem has been detected with a debugger command to the VM.
  • 516     Error occurred during garbage collection, which might indicate a corrupted file system.
  • 510     All threads are waiting on objects, which results in a deadlock. The system cannot recover from this state since no thread can release a lock.
  • 511     A problem has occurred during debugging.
  • 515     The reachable objects form a group that cannot be represented properly by the VM because there are too many objects or the total size of the objects is too large.
  • 516     When committing a persistent object, the VM found that the persistent store id counter has reached its limit. The object was not committed.
  • 517     An inconsistency has been detected in the VM persistent object store.
  • 518     Internal error.
  • 519     Internal error.
  • 520     Internal error.
  • 521     Indicates that Object.wait() has been executed by a thread that holds a lock on another object; occurs only in simulator if the JvmDebugWaits application switch.
  • 522     A thread has acquired two locks on objects in an order that doesn’t match the order that previous locks for the two types were acquired, which indicates a future potential deadlock situation; reported only in the simulator when the JvmDebugLocks application switch is set.
  • 523     A critical Java process has died and the device cannot continue to operate normally.
  • 524     An object has been marked as recovered by the Low Memory Manager but it was not freed during a garbage collection. This is only checked in the simulator under the control of the JvmDebugLMM application switch.
  • 525     Bad persistent object. An auto-commit operation during a garbage collection has detected a non-persistent object reachable from the persistent store root. The type of the object has been output into the event log.
  • 526     The class definition for java.lang.Object cannot be found.
  • 527     The class definition for java.lang.String cannot be found.
  • 528     The file system is corrupted. Data on the handheld is unrecoverable.
  • 529     The file system is corrupted. An attempt is going to be made to recover data, but some data might be lost.
  • 530     Internal JVM error.
  • 531     Flash memory has been exhausted.
  • 532     A JVM assertion has been violated. This error can occur only in the simulator, not on an actual handheld
